Soon, if not already, many will go back to a workplace amongst their peers, interacting with customers again under their local COVID-19 restriction guidelines until restrictions are no longer needed.
Prepare for Your Reaction
Whether you are excited to return to your previous way of doing business or not, be mindful that this is change, which our psyche can subconsciously signal as danger to our brain as a means of self-preservation.
Are We All Doomed?
COVID-19 has affected us all, so this means that we are all in a heap of trouble when we return to work, right? Not necessarily. Dr. David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA, Head of APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence, advised that this stress filled employee type of response can be curtailed, “To build trust and engagement, employers need to focus on building a psychologically healthy workplace where employees are actively involved in shaping the future and confident in their ability to succeed.”
Own Our Part in This
As our pulse increases and our temper shortens, the body goes into fight or flight mode, remember that this is the time. The time to take stock in what your role is and what you are experiencing.
Be appreciative that your body is trying to warn you that something is very different, subconsciously advising you to back away from the experience and shift into self-preservation mode. Own your reaction.
If you are a Leader, your role is to engage with your team and

If you are a team member, your role is to engage with your leadership team requesting to have an open discussion on how best to interact with customers, so the team can feel confident that they are not in danger. Share your appreciation for their part in providing a position for you in the business, reassuring them that the organization is stronger because they are on the frontline.
Take Inventory & Take Ownership
During a heated discussion or a tense exchange at work, it’s important to take inventory of why you are angry to self-address before you explode, or worse, implode. Ownership can be tough in the heat of the moment. Address the situation instead of aiming your frustration at the person in front of you. Get to the root of what is causing the stress and address it before it addresses you.
Strengthen Your Resolve to Resolve
Be on the lookout for any tension and arm yourself ahead of time with what you need to resolve. My “go to” is a series of 6 photos. 1 photo of myself and each family member and then one of us all together from our favorite experiences. It reminds me that I have control over where I allow my mind to go instead of reacting in anger or frustration. Create your “go to” and help others to do the same. The success of your entire team depends on the success of each individual team member; do your part and share your method, you never know who needs a helping hand today.
